Creating a smoke-free environment adds more appeal to tourism in Lao Cai.

Creating a smoke-free environment adds more appeal to tourism in Lao Cai.

Local tourism leaders in Lao Cai province are pushing to make smoke-free environments a core part of the visitor experience, framing the effort as both a public health measure and a way to strengthen the area's reputation as a green and civilized destination.

Speaking about the practical side of tourism operations, a standing vice chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial Tourism Association outlined the difficulties involved in turning smoke-free spaces into a normal part of service culture. He noted that the goal is not simply to restrict smoking but to embed it in how hotels, restaurants, and other businesses present themselves to guests, improving overall quality and making the province more attractive to travelers.

The discussion comes as destinations across Vietnam increasingly compete on cleanliness, safety, and comfort. Supporters of the initiative argue that clear, well-enforced no-smoking rules in tourist areas can set Lao Cai apart, especially among families and international visitors who expect smoke-free public spaces.

Challenges remain, including changing habits among staff and guests, adapting older facilities, and maintaining consistent enforcement across many small businesses. The association's approach emphasizes practical solutions and gradual adoption rather than sudden mandates, with the aim of making smoke-free practices feel natural to both service providers and tourists.

If successful, the effort could help Lao Cai position itself as a sustainable destination where a clean environment and thoughtful service go hand in hand.
