Traffic snarls expose environmental cost of unchecked tourism in Himachal

Himachal Pradesh, a state often called Dev Bhoomi, is facing growing pressure to reconsider its approach to tourism. The warning comes as traffic congestion in popular destinations exposes the environmental cost of unchecked visitor numbers. The state must move beyond the pursuit of ever-increasing tourist arrivals and focus instead on quality tourism that generates sustainable economic benefits while protecting its fragile ecology, local communities and cultural identity.

The current model, built on maximizing footfall, has strained infrastructure and damaged natural resources. Congestion on mountain roads, waste management challenges and pressure on water and forest resources are visible signs of a system that prioritizes volume over value. Local residents bear much of the burden, from disrupted daily life to rising costs and environmental degradation.

A shift toward quality tourism would mean encouraging visitors who stay longer, spend more locally and respect the region's limits. It would require investment in public transport, better waste systems and clear carrying capacity rules for sensitive areas. It would also mean supporting homestays and community-led initiatives that keep benefits within the state.

Himachal's identity as a spiritual and natural haven depends on protecting what draws people there in the first place. Without a deliberate policy shift, the state risks trading its long-term health for short-term gains. The choice is not between tourism and the environment, but between a model that sustains both and one that eventually destroys the very assets it depends on.
