Rethinking Tourism to Tackle the Plastic Problem

Rethinking Tourism to Tackle the Plastic Problem

As environmental awareness grows, public health rules tighten and the tourism industry recovers, one stubborn problem remains: plastic pollution. The sector's comeback has brought jobs and revenue back to many communities, but it has also restored the flow of single-use plastics that clog coastlines, rivers and landfills. Bottles, bags, food containers and packaging often end up in places with weak waste collection, turning scenic destinations into dumping grounds.

Addressing this requires more than cleanup campaigns. Hotels and tour operators can cut unnecessary packaging, switch to refillable systems and work with local suppliers to reduce waste at the source. Governments can enforce deposit schemes and improve collection infrastructure in tourist hotspots. Travelers also have a role: carrying reusable items and choosing businesses that take waste seriously sends a clear signal.

The challenge is not only environmental but economic. Plastic waste damages the very landscapes and marine life that draw visitors in the first place, threatening the long-term viability of the industry itself. Reframing tourism around waste reduction is therefore not a cost but an investment. With coordination among businesses, authorities and visitors, the industry can grow without leaving a trail of plastic behind.
